About MatchWatch

Built to solve a problem every couple knows.

Two people, one screen, forty-five minutes of scrolling. We thought someone should fix that.

MatchWatch started the way most side projects start, with a genuine annoyance that nobody seemed to have fixed properly.

The problem is universal. Two people, one screen, forty-five minutes of scrolling, and a growing tension that has nothing to do with what's on television. Every couple has the argument. Every flatshare has the standoff. Every family has the moment where someone says “I don't mind, you pick” and absolutely does mind.

There are apps that try to solve this. Most of them are US-only, require a specific phone, support exactly two people, and haven't been updated in years. We wanted something that actually worked for Kiwis, Aussies, Brits, and Americans. On any device. For couples, families, flatmates, anyone.

So we built it.

How it works

MatchWatch gives everyone the same deck of movies and shows, personalised to your streaming services and region. You swipe independently. Right for yes, left for no. Your choices are completely private. When two or more people swipe right on the same title, the app tells you it's a match, shows you where to stream it, and you press play.

No negotiating. No compromising. No “fine, we'll watch yours.”

What makes it different

Multi-region from day one. Most apps in this space were built for the US market and never bothered with anywhere else. MatchWatch supports New Zealand, Australia, the United Kingdom, and the United States, with streaming libraries tailored to each country. If you're in NZ, you'll see what's on Neon and TVNZ, not Hulu and HBO.

Any device.MatchWatch is a web app. It runs in any browser on any phone, tablet, or laptop. You don't need a specific phone and you don't need to visit an app store. Add it to your home screen and it works like any native app.

Groups, not just couples. Up to 6 people. Flatmates, families, friend groups. The match threshold scales automatically.

Actively built.MatchWatch is in active development in 2026. New features, including mood filters, Pick For Me roulette, suggest-to-group, trailer previews, and watchlist tracking, ship regularly. This isn't a side project that launched and went quiet. It's being built properly, in the open, with real users testing it.

Where it's going

We're working toward native iOS and Android apps. We're expanding the streaming service coverage. We're improving the recommendation engine. And we're building features that make the experience better for groups, families, and anyone who's ever wasted a Friday night scrolling.

MatchWatch is free to use and will always have a free tier. We'll introduce premium features over time, but the core experience (swipe, match, watch) stays free.
