Demi Moore plays an ageing celebrity offered a black-market way to create a younger version of herself. The Substance is furious, funny and graphically committed to its body horror, so it is a poor family-night compromise and a very good pick for adults who want a movie with teeth.
Heat
Michael Mann's crime epic puts Robert De Niro's meticulous thief against Al Pacino's equally consumed detective and gives both men enough room to become properly inconvenient to everyone around them. It is long, precise and built for a decent screen with the sound up. Begin before the snacks run low; this is nearly three hours and treats every minute as billable.
The Farewell
Awkwafina plays Billi, who returns to China after her family decides not to tell their grandmother about a terminal diagnosis. A wedding provides the cover story and the gathering place, producing a movie that is sad, warm and quietly funny without shoving you towards any one response. Choose it when the lounge wants something human and specific rather than another plot assembled from explosions.
Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon
Ang Lee's martial-arts romance follows a stolen sword, two experienced warriors and a young woman testing the limits placed around her. The fights are graceful without losing their force, and the emotional story gives the spectacle somewhere to land. It is the broadest crowd-pleaser here, provided nobody insists that people cannot run across rooftops because they personally have tried and failed.
Choose by tolerance, not prestige
The Substance is the strongest provocation and the least suitable accidental choice. Heat asks for time and attention, while The Farewell rewards a quieter lounge. Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon sits neatly between them: visually generous, emotionally clear and full of movement without becoming empty noise. You may still spend ten minutes saying you are happy with any of them. History suggests otherwise.
That range is the point. Free streaming catalogues are often treated as a cupboard for things you vaguely remember from a Sunday afternoon, but TVNZ+ has proper movies hiding among the rows.
