Lanterns
The month's big swing: Kyle Chandler and Aaron Pierre as two Green Lanterns working a murder in small-town Nebraska, more slow-burn mystery than cape opera. Mid-August on HBO Max, and the first real test of whether the new app earns its slot in the NZ stack.
Ted Lasso
Season four kicks off on 5 August, one episode a week through spring. Whatever your household thinks it thinks about a fourth season, everyone will still be on the couch for it. Biscuits optional but recommended.
Reacher
Season four lands 12 August with three episodes at once, then weekly. Based on Gone Tomorrow, it starts with a chance encounter on a subway and gets worse from there, in the best way. The most reliable big-bloke television there is.
My Brilliant Career
A brand-new six-part take on the Miles Franklin classic, with Philippa Northeast as Sybylla, writing her way out of rural Australia. All six episodes land 13 August, and yes, the 1979 film gave Sam Neill his start: consider this the month's quiet full-circle moment.
Marc by Sofia
Sofia Coppola points a camera at her old friend Marc Jacobs and gets an intimate slice of pop-culture history. Neon drops it alongside a stack of fashion documentaries ahead of NZ Fashion Week, and it is the classiest thing on this list by a distance.
The Whisper Man
Honourable mention
Robert De Niro, Michael Keaton and Adam Scott in a crime thriller about a widowed writer, an abducted son, and a case that echoes an old one. 28 August, and the honourable mention only because the five above got in first.
The rest of the month, briefly
Beyond the big six, Netflix adds The Last House on 7 August, a sealed-house survival thriller with Greta Lee and Wagner Moura, plus Ricky Gervais's animated comedy Alley Cats the same day. Neon's August line-up adds a whole fashion-documentary collection on 15 August if Marc by Sofia leaves you wanting more. And TVNZ+ keeps doing what it does: local reality, live sport, and the shows the whole flat ends up watching by accident.
Plan the month before the scroll eats it
One pacing note before you commit the month. Ted Lasso and Reacher are weekly, so they are your Tuesday and Wednesday sorted through spring, while My Brilliant Career drops all six parts on the 13th and The Whisper Man closes the month as proper binge material. Front-load Lanterns when it lands mid-month, keep Marc by Sofia for a quiet Sunday, and suddenly the coldest month of the year has a schedule. Weetbix for tea in front of the good TV. Winter sorted.
