When crime needs jokes in the room
Only Murders in the Building
This is the cleanest bridge between a mystery fan and someone who does not want the evening embalmed in seriousness. Three neighbours investigate deaths around their apartment building while making a podcast, so the clues matter but the comic chemistry keeps air in the room. It is still murder, obviously. The title did make a reasonable effort to warn you.
Slow Horses
A group of sidelined MI5 agents handles dangerous work under a boss who appears to regard basic civility as an enemy operation. The spy plotting rewards the thriller viewer, while the insults, office failures and damaged characters give the other person more than tradecraft. Episodes still demand attention, so do not choose it as wallpaper while both of you answer messages.
The Bear
A chef returns to run his family's Chicago sandwich shop, where grief, ambition and broken systems all arrive during service. The show is funny, but not relaxing; its comedy comes through pressure and people trying badly to care for one another. Pick it when one viewer wants serious drama and the other wants sharp character comedy, not when either person needs their pulse lowered.
Abbott Elementary
Abbott Elementary follows teachers doing good work inside a school that rarely makes it easy. The mockumentary form gives you quick jokes, while the workplace relationships and small victories create enough ongoing story for someone who claims sitcoms never go anywhere. It is the gentler compromise here and the best option when the evening has already taken enough out of both viewers.
The Traitors
The UK series of The Traitors turns reality casting into a social deduction game, giving the reality fan alliances and personalities while the strategy viewer gets lies, votes and evidence of wildly variable quality. ThreeNow carries the series free with ads in New Zealand. You will both become certain you could spot a traitor immediately. This confidence has not been tested under studio lighting.

Honourable mention
FROM drops a group of strangers into a town they cannot leave, then gives the mystery fan clues and the drama fan a frightened community under pressure. The night-time creatures make this the least cosy compromise here, but the human problem is as important as the puzzle. Choose it when both viewers can tolerate being told one more episode at a deeply unreasonable hour.
Which shows bridge genuinely different tastes?
Genre compromise often fails because it produces the watered-down version of what each person wanted. Instead, identify the ingredient underneath the request: tension, jokes, a puzzle, warm characters or people behaving badly in a large house. Only Murders supplies puzzle plus comedy; The Bear supplies pressure plus character; The Traitors supplies strategy plus human mess.
This works for partners, flatmates, siblings and friends who share a screen but not a taste profile. Each person should name one thing they want from the evening and one thing they cannot face, then choose from the overlap. It sounds suspiciously like communication because it is, though mercifully the exercise can be completed without a whiteboard or a feelings circle.
