What should you watch first on HBO Max Australia?
The Last of Us
Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey cross a ruined United States where the infected are dangerous and the surviving people are often worse. The production is enormous, but the reason to stay is the uneasy relationship at its centre. Start here when the room wants serious drama, can handle violence and would rather follow one emotional journey than learn the rules of another sprawling universe.
House of the Dragon
The Targaryen family turns a succession problem into an expensive national disaster involving grudges, marriages and very large dragons. It has the scale people expect from Westeros, but the engine is a family making one terrible political decision after another. Pick it when the lounge wants spectacle and is happy to spend part of every episode asking which silver-haired relative has just entered the room.
Euphoria
Zendaya leads a visually intense high-school drama about addiction, friendship, sex and the stories people tell to survive themselves. It is beautifully made and frequently difficult, so this is not a casual family pick or background television. Choose it when the room wants a performance-led drama and is ready to check the content advice first rather than discovering the tone three minutes in.
Peacemaker
John Cena plays an aggressively patriotic superhero who believes peace is worth almost any amount of violence. James Gunn gives the action plenty of noise, then keeps finding bruised people underneath the costumes. It is crude, funny and unexpectedly warm. Choose Peacemaker when a comic-book night sounds good but another solemn lecture about destiny absolutely does not.
A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms
A large hedge knight called Dunk and his small, extremely opinionated squire Egg travel through Westeros before the events of Game of Thrones. The scale is more human than House of the Dragon, with roadside trouble, tourneys and an odd friendship doing the work. It is the gentler gateway for someone curious about the world but not ready for a family tree that needs its own whiteboard.
Friends
Six friends spend ten seasons making New York rent look like a minor administrative detail. You already know whether the Central Perk rhythm works for you, which is exactly why it belongs here. Friends is the low-effort option after a long day: familiar characters, short episodes and no requirement to remember who betrayed which royal house three generations ago.
Pick by commitment, not by reputation
The Last of Us is the strongest first recommendation for a room that wants one substantial drama. House of the Dragon is the larger commitment, especially if every alliance needs a post-episode debrief. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms gives the same world a lighter, more compact entry. Peacemaker is the release valve: loud, rude and far more interested in damaged teammates than a respectable superhero story might admit.
Euphoria needs the clearest mood check. It is not a show to put on because the thumbnail looked polished. Friends sits at the other end of the effort scale and is useful precisely because nobody needs a briefing. The right first show is not automatically the most decorated one. It is the one that suits how much attention, time and emotional damage the couch has available tonight.

The product has since returned to the HBO Max name.
