Off camera he ran Two Paddocks, a Central Otago vineyard he built from a hobby into a seriously respected producer, and he was knighted in 2022 after originally turning the honor down for being too grand. He went public with a rare blood cancer in 2023, beat it through a clinical trial, and declared himself cancer-free in April. Pneumonia took him on July 13, as reported by the Otago Daily Times. More than 150 screen credits, and by every account, zero enemies. That is a stat line. He was also, late in life, one of the internet's favorite follows: videos from the farm, animals named for his famous friends, and during chemo he kept posting, honest and completely unsentimental about all of it. He said dying did not frighten him, it would simply annoy him. That is the whole guy in one line.

His Cardinal Wolsey is sly, tired, and devastating by the end. The honorable mention because the five above are the fastest routes to loving him, but this one rewards the commitment.
One Jurassic Park is enough
About the franchise: he came back for Jurassic Park III in 2001 and Jurassic World Dominion in 2022, and he was the best thing in both. Only the 1993 original deserves your rental money.
