Why did Lock, Stock land in America as the British Pulp Fiction?
Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels cost about £800,000 and took $28.4 million worldwide, per The Numbers. America met it as the British answer to Pulp Fiction, and that read was half right. Ritchie kept the interlocking plots and the motormouth dialogue, then swapped the diner cool for something scrappier and a lot more working class: guys in bad jackets who owe money to worse people, shot in freeze-frames with the names stamped on screen. The BFI credits it with reviving the British gangster movie, then notes most of the imitators were unwatchable.
