This guide covers what is new to streaming in September 2026: six releases worth building the month around, with the dates, the services, and what to watch first if you need to catch up. The Emmys open it on Monday the 14th, live on NBC and Peacock. Football is back, and Labor Day weekend hands you three unscheduled days.
Two August shows keep their weekly slots: Lanterns on HBO Max to its October 4 finale, and Ted Lasso through October 7. The pattern under the rest is franchise math. Four of the six below are continuations: a Reacher character handed her own series, a fourth Monster, a sixth Slow Horses, a thirteenth American Horror Story. Streaming has stopped introducing things and started extending them.
The oddity is the football. On Thursday the 10th, Netflix streams a regular-season NFL game played in Melbourne, Australia, a sentence that would not have parsed five years ago. Here is the month, biggest first.
Six new to streaming in September, sorted
One bar for this list: releases people will be talking about at work the next morning. Five picks and one honorable mention, six services, no service showing up twice. The Mandalorian and Grogu
The year's biggest four-quadrant movie lands on Disney+ on September 2 at no extra charge, three months after theaters. Din Djarin and Grogu, one more job, and the rare pick that holds a room of adults and kids at the same time. Start the month right here.
Michael
Antoine Fuqua's Michael Jackson movie, with Jaafar Jackson playing his uncle, comes to HBO Max in late September after its spring run in theaters. The month's biggest music moment, and the one your group chat argues about for a week. No firm day from HBO Max yet, so keep the last week clear.
Neagley
The Reacher spin-off hands Neagley her own case, and Prime Video drops all eight episodes on September 16. One night, one season, done. Reacher season four was August. This is the payoff, and it is built to be finished before Thursday.
Slow Horses
Season six starts on Apple TV on September 16 and runs weekly through October 21. Gary Oldman's Jackson Lamb is still the most reliable hour on television, and six new episodes means Wednesday nights are spoken for. Nobody in the house is going to fight you on this one.
Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story
Netflix's Monster anthology comes back on September 17 with all eight episodes at once, and this time the subject is Lizzie Borden. It is built for one long night on the couch. It will be everywhere by Friday morning, and you already know you are watching it.
American Horror Story
Honorable mention
Season 13 opens with a three-episode premiere on Hulu on September 24, which is the exact right week to start being scared on purpose. Honorable mention because you either have twelve seasons of history with this show or none at all, and both of those are fine.
The six, up close, and what to watch first
The Mandalorian and Grogu
Jon Favreau wrote and directed it, and it runs two hours and twelve minutes. The Empire has fallen, its warlords are scattered, and the New Republic hires Din Djarin and his apprentice for the cleanup. Pedro Pascal is back under the helmet, Sigourney Weaver plays Colonel Ward, and Jeremy Allen White voices Rotta the Hutt. Martin Scorsese is in the voice cast, which is either a great joke or a favor being repaid. The reservation is obvious: it assumes you watched the show.
So do the homework, or some of it. The Mandalorian's three seasons are on Disney+, eight episodes each at about 41 minutes, which is 24 episodes and roughly 16 hours. You do not need all of it. Season three on its own is eight episodes and under six hours, and it is the most recent, which makes it the efficient way in. The Book of Boba Fett sits on the same subscription, seven episodes at about 47 minutes, so another five and a half hours, and that one is a side trip rather than required reading. Skip it if the calendar is tight. With no time at all, go anyway.
Michael
Antoine Fuqua's biopic runs two hours and eight minutes and tracks Michael Jackson from the boy fronting the Jackson 5 to the solo artist who rearranged pop around himself. Jaafar Jackson, his real-life nephew, plays him. Colman Domingo is Joseph Jackson and Nia Long is Katherine. The release slid into spring before it reached theaters, usually a bad sign and not one here. The question is whether a production this close to the family can be honest about the man.
There is no series homework, which is half the appeal. The only prep is the man's own catalog, and you have that memorized whether you admit it or not. What this pick needs is patience on the date. HBO Max has it in late September, after the theatrical run, and the studio has not confirmed a day. The listings that do exist point at the last Friday of the month, which is a guess with a decent pedigree and still a guess. Treat the last week as a window rather than a night. If it slides into October, it slides by days, not weeks.
Neagley
Frances Neagley is a private investigator in Chicago. A friend from her past dies in a suspicious accident, and she goes after it with what she learned in the army and from Reacher. Maria Sten steps out of the Reacher ensemble to lead, with Greyston Holt, Adeline Rudolph, Matthew Del Negro, and Damon Herriman around her, and Nick Santora and Nicholas Wootton running it. Amazon has confirmed Alan Ritchson guest stars as Reacher, the detail that decides how many people show up.
Reacher's four seasons are on Prime Video, 32 episodes at roughly 50 minutes each, so about 26 hours from cold. Optional rather than essential. This one opens on a new case in a new city with a new supporting cast, and it is built so a newcomer can start there. If you want one season first for the voice of the thing, season one is eight episodes running 42 to 54 minutes, which is a weekend. If you watched Reacher season four last month you are already current and the 16th asks nothing of you. Either way, clear an evening. Eight episodes at once is the intended dose.
Slow Horses
Slough House is where MI5 parks the agents it cannot quite fire, and Jackson Lamb runs it with contempt for everyone including himself. Gary Oldman is doing the best work of his late career in a stained raincoat. Kristin Scott Thomas, Jack Lowden, and Saskia Reeves are back with him, and Apple has Saul Metzstein directing season six. Six episodes, weekly, September 16 through October 21. The risk with a show this consistent is routine. It has not blinked yet.
Five seasons are already on Apple TV, six episodes each at about 46 minutes, so 30 episodes and roughly 23 hours. Essential, but not urgent. The useful number is the season rather than the total: six episodes at 46 minutes is under five hours, which puts one season inside a weekend and the whole run inside a month of evenings. The cases close off season by season, so you can start at six and follow the plot. What you give up is the character math, which is the actual reason people are loyal to this one. Start at season one now and you are current well before the October finale.
Monster: The Lizzie Borden Story
The fourth Monster takes the Borden killings and the cruel Victorian household that produced them. Ella Beatty plays Lizzie. Charlie Hunnam and Rebecca Hall are Andrew and Abby Borden, with Vicky Krieps as Bridget Sullivan and Sarah Paulson in the cast. Ian Brennan is the sole credited creator this time; the Dahmer season carried his name and Ryan Murphy's. The reservation is the one this franchise always earns: it is lurid, uninterested in restraint, and very good at making you finish it anyway.
Nothing is required first, because the anthology resets every season. All three earlier ones are on Netflix if you want the run: the Dahmer season at ten episodes, the Menendez brothers season at nine of about 52 minutes, and the Ed Gein season at eight of about 56. That is twenty-seven episodes, and heavy going in one stretch. If you want a single season to calibrate against, the Ed Gein one is the closest match in shape, also eight episodes and about seven and a half hours. Most households will start here on the 17th and be fine, and nobody will hold the skipping against you.
American Horror Story
Ryan Murphy and Brad Falchuk's FX anthology reaches thirteen seasons, which in television terms is a monument with a leaky roof. Twelve are done, each with its own title and story: Murder House, Asylum, Coven, Freak Show, Hotel, on through Delicate in 2023. Season 13 is listed at thirteen episodes, its longest since Freak Show in 2014, with three landing on the 24th. Whether that length reads as confidence or as padding is the whole question with late-period AHS.
The catch-up is that there is none. Every season stands alone, nothing carries over, and no order is required. The earlier twelve are on Hulu, 132 episodes in total, which makes the back catalog a menu instead of a queue. Pick a season by its subject and watch only that one. The shortest ways in are 1984 and Delicate at nine episodes each, and the longest are Asylum, Coven, and Freak Show at thirteen. If you would rather commit to nothing at all, the premiere on the 24th is a clean way in, which is what an anthology is for.
The rest of the month, briefly
Behind the six: Colin from Accounts airs its final season on Paramount+ from the 10th, MobLand season two starts there on the 18th, and The Traitors: New Blood starts on Peacock the same day. Peacock also has The Paper season two on the 9th. Toy Story 5 hits Disney+ on the 23rd, if the kids get a vote.
Stack the month so nothing slips past you
One scheduling note. Slow Horses runs weekly to October 21, so Wednesdays are locked from the 16th. Everything else is a full drop.
